Meet the J, E, & M of JEM Racing
So if you’ve ever been sitting in the stands wondering what the JEM Racing logo stands for, here it is.
Driver ~ Matt Van Gelder
I am a father, husband, business owner and when I get the chance race car driver. I’ve been passionate about racing for as long as I can remember and probably always will be. When I was about 12 I started working on Figure 8 cars and then got the chance to drive one when I was 16. Over the next couple of years, I was able to race a few times each season. But then it was time to leave for college and racing moved to the back burner. In the late 1990’s I was able to put together an IMCA stock car which I drove for a couple of seasons at various tracks in southeastern Iowa. Then in 2002, I moved from dirt to pavement with a Sportsman car at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I had a blast on the paved half mile and loved that my, fiance at the time, Jenny joined in as a car chief. We ran a full season that year and won the Rookie of The Year title. But then racing was set aside again, this time for my career. Over a decade passed, we started our own business and added Elliot to our family. Although our lives were full, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I was missing something. So we went back to dirt and purchased an old Sport Mod. Although it’s incredibly hard work and can be the most frustrating thing I’ve ever done, I still love it.
